Description:
Bob J. Tandy was an amazing man with a lifetime of accomplishments. He literally gave of himself his entire life. Bob and his wife Sue moved to Montgomery in 1959 where he accepted a position with New Market High School teaching math and physical education.
He also served as the head coach for track and baseball. Because of his love for basketball, he always dreamed of being a basketball coach. Once he became a teacher at New Market High School, he discovered his true passion for teaching and enjoyed challenging students to excel in the academic arena. This started a lifetime of service to South Montgomery Community School Corporation. In 1963, he became the principal of New Market High School and in 1966 he was selected as the first superintendent of South Montgomery School Corporation. He served in that position until his retirement in 1997. Upon his retirement, after 38 years of service to South Montgomery Schools, the school board established The Bob J. Tandy Scholarship Fund as a tribute to him. The Bob J. Tandy Scholarship is for a graduate of Southmont High School who is pursuing a degree in the field of education.
The Tandy Scholarship is for a full time student who will graduate in good standing from Southmont High School and plans to major in the field of education. The scholarship award is for one year only and is not renewable.
Criteria:
- You must be a graduate in good standing from Southmont High School by the end of June in the year that the application is submitted
- You must have at least a B- average
- You must be planning to pursue a baccalaureate degree with a major in education at an accredited public or private college or university
- Must have participated in athletics or music for three or more years
- Must have high moral standards
- Must have completed a minimum of ten (10) trimesters by the application deadline to be eligible to apply for the Tandy Scholarship
