Bowman Memorial Ride

6.16.14

The American Legion Riders Post 72 recently held the annual Brian Bowman Memorial Ride with approximately 40 riders participating. The Riders have proudly sponsored this event for the past three years and have raised thousands of dollars for the Brian Bowman Memorial Scholarship Fund. SPC Brian Bowman, from Montgomery County, was killed in January 2010 in Ashoque, Afghanistan while tending to the needs of a wounded soldier. The scholarship fund was established by family and friends to honor his memory and ensure that his legacy will live on in this community.

This year, the first award was given from this scholarship to Korbin Myers, a Southmont graduate. In her application essay, she wrote the following in response to the question, What does patriotism mean to you? "Patriotism is more than having love for your country. It’s individuals taking a personal responsibility in making their community better. Patriotism is taking JFK’s quote to heart, “Ask not what your country can do for you: ask what you can do for your country.” I believe Patriotism is found in the soldier fighting for our country, police officer working the night shift, and the every day citizen helping to better their community."
