Essay Contest Winners!

11.13.13

The Montgomery County Community Foundation sponsored the second annual Essay Contest in honor of Community Foundation Week, November 11-15. We invited 8th grade students from all three county schools to participate and write an essay regarding the statement, “It is better to give than to receive” and why they believe that to be true based on a personal experience. An outside judge looked at the submitted essays and chose an overall top winner and two runner-ups.

We are so pleased to announce our three winners! They are: 1st place, Brianna Martin, Southmont Jr. High; 2nd place, Elizabeth Swift, Tuttle Middle School; and 3rd place, Joy Shirar, Northridge Middle School. Congratulations to all! The essays were touching, engaging and insightful and we were encouraged by their thoughts on giving. To read all three essays, please click here.

As our top winner, Brianna received a $100 MCCF grant to direct to the nonprofit agency of her choice and she chose Mountie Mission. A special assembly was held at Southmont and Principal Mike Sowers can be seen in the top news photo accepting a $250 MCCF grant from Brianna on behalf of the school. Elizabeth chose to direct her $50 MCCF grant to the Animal Welfare League and Joy chose the Achaius Ranch for her $50 grant. Thank you to all the teachers who supported and encouraged this local contest and to all the students who participated. We look forward to next year!
