Honor Flight - Remembrance of our Freedom

9.27.12

The Montgomery County Community Foundation recently awarded a $10,000 grant to Indiana Gold Star Mothers, Lafayette Chapter for their September 24th Honor Flight. Two of our staff, Cheryl Keim and Paula Reed, had the tremendous privilege of going on that flight as Guardians. The Honor Flight takes war veterans to Washington D.C. for a tour of the WWII Memorial, Korean War Memorial, and Vietnam War Memorial. It also included a stop at the Lincoln Memorial and then a trip to Arlington Cemetery to the tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the changing of the guard ceremony.

The Indiana Gold Star Mothers did an outstanding job planning this trip and no detail was overlooked. Their passion for our veterans was obvious, along with their concern for their well-being and safety on the trip. The veterans were met along the way with cheers, applause, and most importantly, respect for their service to our country. Many branches of service were represented; however, from their camaraderie, it was evident that they were all connected by a sense of pride and patriotism for our country.

It was inspiring and uplifting to spend the day with a group of people who changed the course of history while defending our freedom. Be on the lookout for our Fall BRIDGES newsletter where we will tell the rest of the story!
